“Since narcissists deep down feel themselves to be faultless, it is inevitable that when they are in conflict with the world they will invariably perceive the conflict as the world’s fault.”
M. Scott Peck
Lest anyone doubt presidential wannabee Donald Trump’s priorities, his rhetoric makes it crystal clear addressing such critical issues as the national emergency on the southern border, immigration reform, or international crisis which could quickly result in destabilizing political situations in Europe, the Middle East and Pacific Rim and potentially drawing America into wars it is trying to avoid, is secondary to his personal ambitions.
Without even seen it, Trump is aggressively demanding House Republicans kill the Senate’s bi-partisan legislation providing funding to dramatically increase border security together with a pledge from President Biden to “shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed,” desperately-needed weapons and other assistance for Ukraine, and military assistance for Israel and Taiwan. This compromise legislation, an essential element for a functioning democracy, while not giving everyone everything they might like, goes a long way toward addressing critical national priorities.
Calling it a “horrible bill,” Trump has threatened Republicans willing to compromise with Democrats while acknowledging his primary motivation for blocking the bill is to deny Biden another bipartisan election year legislative accomplishment.
Trump continues to put his personal ego, ambition, and quest for power ahead of America’s national security interests! This should come as no surprise given Trump’s history of refusing to acknowledge his election loss, ignoring his oath of office, demonstrating a disdain for the Constitution, showing contempt for our nation’s most important institutions and vindictiveness toward anyone and everyone who disagrees with him or chooses to hold him accountable for his actions or words.
Members of Congress and particularly those in the House (whose answer to the border crisis seems to be impeaching Homeland Secretary Mayorkas) who continue to encourage and enable Trump’s narcissistic and anti-American behavior are equally responsible for legislative gridlock and an unwillingness to put the interests or America and Americans ahead of personal ambitions.
