They made up a ‘suckers’ and ‘losers’ statement. So terrible.”

Donald Trump

In today’s “Morning Shots”, William Kristol penned a timely commentary, “Trump’s Latest Lies About His Lies,” excerpting from a recent speech he made at the annual Faith and Freedom Conference.

Trump criticized a 2020 article in the Atlantic, based on multiple first-hand and credible sources, he canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018 because he felt the soldiers who died during the World War I battle of Belleau Wood were “suckers” and asked, “Why should I go to that cemetery?  It’s filled with losers.

The article went on to cite another incident at Arlington National Cemetery where retired and well-respected General John Kelly was visiting the grave of his son who had been killed-in-action in Afghanistan when Trump purportedly remarked, “I don’t get it. What was in it for them?

This is the same person who famously described former John McCain, who spent 7-years in the Hanoi Hilton and refused repatriation if others had to remain, “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

Not surprisingly, Trump, a Vietnam-era draft-evader, tweeted, “I never called our great fallen soldiers anything other than HEROES. This is more made-up Fake News given by disgusting & jealous failures in a disgraceful attempt to influence the 2020 Election!”

The ego-sensitive Trump asserted, “I would be willing to swear on anything that I never said that about our fallen heroes. There is nobody that respects them more. So, I just think it’s a horrible, horrible thing.”

This is the same Donald Trump who took a solemn oath on January 20, 2017 to, “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States,” and thus, “take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.”   Given his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, engineering the January 6th insurrection, retention of classified government documents, and promises of unconstitutional retribution against his perceived enemies if reelected, one sees how little any oath means to him!

It would be interesting whether Trump would be willing to take a lie detector where he’d be asked about comments he allegedly made about American veterans.
