President Trump’s photo-op trip to the Super Bowl is estimated to have cost American taxpayers between $15 and $20 million, but raised no concerns from his DOGE Czar Elon Musk.
The long-term interests of the American people would have been far better served had he spent last weekend visiting some of those impoverished, primarily African, nations where some 25 million people’s lives have been saved from starvation with food provided by, clean water made available by, and vaccination programs run by USAID … disastrously, unilateral, and likely illegally, terminated by an unelected and unconfirmed billionaire Trump mega donor!
With the presidents blessing, Musk also effectively shut-down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau whose mission has been to protect vulnerable Americans from predatory financial institutions and been given unfettered access to legal-protected personal information on Americans which even Congress cannot obtain without judicial approval.
Then again, neither Musk nor Trump, who thrive on greed and power, have ever been known for their compassion or empathy for others in need.
The president’s manifest destiny fantasies, withdrawal from key international climate, health, and scientific organizations and relying on “diplomacy-through-threats” when dealing with other countries might generate token short-term benefits, but over time are likely to result in mistrust of America and loss of its credibility, influence, security and leadership around the globe.
Domestically, the Administration’s policies are prone to result in increased inflation and unemployment. They also give rise to escalating our nation’s political and cultural divides, weaponizing the Justice Department against Trump’s perceived critics, ignoring the rule of law, defying Judicial rulings, emasculating the Congress and eroding civil liberties … threatening our Republic.
Meanwhile, where are the spineless and cowardly Congressional Republicans (terrified Trump’s wrath and being primaried) who swore a sacred oath to the Constitution … not Donald Trump?
It took the president’s role model, Viktor Orbán eight years to dismantle Hungary’s democracy and legal system and Hitler just 55-days to destroy the Weimar Republic’s democracy. One must worry about how long an autocratic and uncheck Trump would need to do the same here in America.
